  • To access Timberlake Server from off campus. You need first Connect a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This is because all UB CSE server only allows the UB IP (Internet Protocol) address to access. The timberlake server will block other non-UB IP address that you acquired from your home Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Time Warner or Verizon.

    To connect VPN, you need first Download and Configure the Windows VPN client software -- Cisco AnyConnect.

    Step 1: Download and Install Cisco AnyConnect

    1. Go to https://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/service-guides/software/downloading/windows-software/managing-your-software/anyconnect.html.
    2. Click the blue 'Download' button. Note: The UBIT system will ask you to input your UBITName and Password to verify your identify.
    3. Double click on the downloaded *.msi (e.g. anyconnect-win-3.1.11004-pre-deploy-k9.msi) file to install Cisco AnyConnect.
      • Click on Next on the Welcome screen.
      • Click on the bubble beside I accept the terms in the License Agreement.
      • Click Next on the End-User License Agreement screen.
      • Click Install on the Ready to Install screen.
      • Depending on your computer’s security level you may be prompted by Windows to allow the AnyConnect client to change your PC. Accept the prompt to continue.
      • Click Finish to complete the installation.

    Step 2: Configure Cisco AnyConnect

    1. Click or tap on the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility software app to launch the program. The icon looks like:

      • Please wait while PuTTY is installed on your computer. When the installation is complete, select whether you want to view the README.txt document for PuTTY then click Finish.

    Step 4: Connect Timberlake Server using PuTTY

    1. Click or tap on the PuTTY software app to launch the program. The icon looks like:

  • You can use UB_Secure Wi-Fi instead of a VPN client. UB_Secure encrypts all network traffic from your device to UB. You can also connect securely using ResNet in the residence halls and campus apartments instead.

      • Click Accept to accept the terms of the software license agreement.
      • Click Continue on the Destination Selection screen.
      • Click Install on the Installation Type screen.
      • Depending on your computer’s security level you may be prompted by Windows to allow the AnyConnect client to change your OSX. Type your OSX username and password and click Install Software to continue.
      • Click Close to complete the installation.

    Step 2: Configure Cisco AnyConnect

    3. Type echo -n YOUR_UBITPASSWORD | sudo openconnect -u YOUR_UBIT_NAME --passwd-on-stdin ubvpn.buffalo.edu inside the terminal, change `YOUR_UBIT_NAME' to you own UBIT Name, change `YOUR_UBITPASSWORD' to you own UBIT Password.
    4. Hit Enter and your're good to go.
